While practicing family physicians and clinicians can carry out professional duties in the face of multiple, competing demands, Postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) residents in Family Medicine Residency Training Programs are expected to recognize competing demands in their professional duties during residency and seek assistance in determining priorities in the face of multiple, competing demands, when needed. Adaptability is one of the four domains which are tested in Family Medicine Professional Choices FMProC/CProMF (Choix professionnels en Médecine de famille).

Their ability to prioritize issues to be addressed in patients' encounters are often tested on the Family Medicine Professional Choises (FMProC / CProFM) test. In both the rating and ranking questions, PGY1 ability to identify the concerns and goals of the patient and family for the encounter, prioritizing a procedure or therapy, taking into account clinical urgency and available resources, are common themes for this test.
